The recycling industry places a vital role in the Illinois economy. That is the key message from a new economic study released by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
The study reports that 40,000 residents are directly employed in the industry, and that furthermore, recycling generates 111,500 direct, indirect and induced jobs, translating into an annual payroll of $3.6 billion. The industry generates $30.3 billion in gross receipts.
Governor Pat Quinn stressed that recycling is not only good for the environment, but is "putting people to work in an important, growing field."
