The aluminum beverage container recycling rate is over 57%, but aluminum giant Novelis Inc. has good news for recyclers. It is looking to push that recovery higher.
Novelis, the world leader in aluminum rolling and beverage can recycling, wants to significantly reduce its carbon footprint as well as those of its customers. Novalis says that recycled metal currently accounts for 34 percent of all material is uses, and at the projected usage goal of 80 percent, the result will be the removal of ten million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually from the aluminum product value chain.
Novelis is promoting its environmental initiative in three key areas:
Raw Materials - Novelis is planning to utilize more recycled material. It will launch major expansions of its recycling and remelting capacity around the globe, while expanding buyback opportunities to customers for the aluminum scrap they generate in their processes.
Post-Consumer Recycling - Novelis intends to launch new initiatives and expand its recycling facility infrastructure to improve the recycling rate. The company will collaborate with stakeholders to expand existing recycling programs and educate consumers.
Product Innovation - Novelis is accelerating its research and development of new products, while looking to increase partnership initiatives with its customers looking at the next generation of aluminum alloys that will enable greater use of post-consumer recycled metal.
Post-consumer recycling success requires commitment and convenience, and additional collaboration and urgency from industry to help promote material recovery should prove beneficial.
