I can't tell you how many workplace accident reports I have seen over the years where the root cause was listed as operator inattention. One challenging aspect of keeping employees safe at work is keeping them engaged in their job and striving to improve. At a systems level, it is important to maintain business systems that incorporate attributes such as attainable goals, clear communication, supervision and feedback. It is also important to build a successful corporate safety culture.
At an operator level, one way to promote engagement is to celebrate excellence and get people talking about it. Case in point is forklift competitions, such as the BC Championship Forklift Rally held every year in conjunction with NAOSH Week in British Columbia. Many companies initially hold their own internal competitions, with the best sent to represent them at the Championship
