In spite of negative press about wood pallets and pallet recycling in recent years, more than ever continue to be reused, repaired or recycled. This view is supported by a new pallet study from the UK, as I report at www.packagingrevolution.net.
According to The Quantification of the Manufacture, Recycling and Re-use of Wood Packaging in the UK, 2010, the quantity of recycled or reused pallets as a proportion of the total rose from 55 percent to 62.2 percent between 2009 and 2010; and the amount of reused/recycled timber used in manufacture increased from 9 percent to 12.7 percent of the total. Pallet pooling and retrieval programs have acted to decrease demand for new pallets. This follows a previous report covering pallet industry activity in 2008/2009.
