Tire recyclers have played an important role in the cleanup of illegal tire dumps across the country. But now, two Forida men find themselves facing charges for illegally dumping tires, according to ABC.
According to the ABC story, Ken Lowman, Vice President of Greenway Tire Recycling in Lakeland, is accused of employing another man, Robert Bickford to store 10,000 used tires in his backyard lean-to. Detectives say that four loads of tires, approximately 6,800 in total, were dumped over a two week period. The tires were placed close to a burn pit, where Bickford was charged with burning tires and other illegal material.
Detectives say that customers probably paid around $2 each for proper disposal, but instead the tires were brought to the backyard site. According to them, Lowman said he was planning to send the tires to Asia for biofuels production.
