Companies that run electric forklifts are being "lead" astray, as I reported recently at packagingrevolution.net. Lead recycling can be very profitable for metal thieves.
According to the Fork Lift Truck Association, some companies have tricked into parting with highly valuable lead-acid batteries, by criminals posing as technicians.
In one circumstance, thieves convinced a company to use its own fork lift truck to help load the batteries onto their truck. The scrap value of batteries, which can weigh in at approximately 2,500 kg, approaches £500 per tonne. There is an estimated 200,000 electric-powered fork lift trucks working in the UK, and some operators also own spare batteries.
