Can you rely on your electronics recycler to destroy your personal information?
The answer is not necessarily, at least in the case of the Electronic Recycling Association of Alberta. Noting that some locations are poorly staffed and inadequately secured, some businesses and government departments have had their computers, laptops, servers, and event routers and switches, removed from these sites, and sold, without having their information erased. In some cases the processors that collected the equipment for recycling on behalf of the organization have resold these items, with sensitive data inside.
The ERA is urging the public to erase their hard drives, or remove them completely before bringing them to any electronic waste collection depots. The ERA also offers mobile hard drive shredding services to guarantee total data destruction.
